Hand Forged History

Once a student of history, now a master. Elmer Roush has been hand forging works of art for decades. Specializing in patterns ranging from classic 'smith tools, to Colonial axes, to Viking designs, Elmer brings a feel of the past to each piece he creates. Bringing examples of historical tools - usable, ready to work - to life in his North Carolina shop by the flames of his coal forge. Each tool is not only forged by his hands, but by tools he himself has crafted. From the edge put on a 'hawk, to the shape and finish of the handle you hold, is handmade by Elmer. Using mostly non-powered hand tools and a select few powered devices (when he wants to), Elmer's goal is to keep the spirit and ways of the past alive for the next generations to see, feel, and use.

Viking Axes

Elmer is what you would call an 'authority' when it comes to Viking axes. Not only is he well versed in their history, but he has had the opportunity to study and take notes on actual historic 9th and 10th century Viking tools. His creations are more than inspired by these historic pieces - they are often patterned in such a way that owning one of his axes is one of the only and closest ways to get you hands on a a real Viking axe in usable form. See the Viking Axes.

Colonial Axes and Trade 'Hawks

Classic designs and profiles, patterned after historical axes and tools brought over and made in Colonial America. From the typical hatchet or pack axe, to regional designs like those found in the Hudson Bay area, and trade axes found with Native tribes. Each is made the same way, with the same tools and with the same methods as they were hundreds of years ago.  See the Trade 'Hawks.

Historic Axes and Tools

Classic designs and profiles, patterned after 18th and 19th century tools. His hatchets and axes are modeled after those found in Europe ,and coming over to and being built in the Americas. Each feels like a tool your great, great, great..... great, great grandfather would have used in the colonies, the frontier, and the newly forged United States. See more Axes.

Smith Tools and More

A good craftsman needs great tools to help bring the best out of them. One of Elmer's passions and first areas of forging was crafting hand tools and blacksmithing tools. Every piece that Elmer forges is done on tools he has made himself, so you can see the the potential. Tongs, hammers, measuring devices and more, keep an eye out for new arrivals to add to your forging arsenal. See all Tools.
